Thank you to Patricia and Edward Shillingburg, local authors and historians, for gifting us with their recently published book, Shelter Island's Historic Places. Quinipet is one of nine featured sites. Our copies are on the Welcome Center shelves or purchase your copy from the Shelter Island Historical Society. Thank you Shillingburgs!
A couple weeks ago we received several unique items from Quinipet's past. We are thrilled Patricia, Daniel Kaufhold's daughter, thought to send them to us! These items were beautifully kept and are in great condition.
In 1928, a 12 year old camper, Daniel Kaufhold received a medal for horseback riding and a medal for being a Junior LSS. Then in 1929, he received a medal for swimming, and a trophy cup for Aquatic. During these years, Quinipet was know as the Quinipet Camp for Boys.
Quinipet has a fascinating story that has touched literally thousands of lives. We're collecting and preserving our history and invite you to share photos, memories, and traditions. If you have something you'd like to share (or donate), we'd love to hear from you!
