Traditional Overnight Camp: Ages 8-16

Sailing Overnight Camp: Ages 9-16

Established by the Methodist Church in 1947, Quinipet is literally founded on the 5 rocks found in the center of our camp that are etched with these words: Faith, Courage, Love, Humility and Honesty. We welcome campers from all walks of life, faith, and backgrounds.

Whether you come for one week or all eight, you will make longlasting friendships, laugh a LOT, and enjoy the beautiful natural environment of Shelter Island. Our goal is for children to feel welcome, to try new things, and to deepen their spiritual values. Quinipet has all the fun of a traditional Christian summer camp surrounded by water!

Overnight campers choose electives for the week, tailoring their activity schedule and meeting new friends. Campers also enjoy cabin time, when campers enjoy less structured time with bunkmates, such as a campfire with s'mores. Every day includes time at the waterfront, our campers' favorite!

Campers are housed by age and gender, giving them a chance to connect and grow with others their own age. Our roomy cabins have bunk beds, electricity, bathrooms, and air conditioning!

Overnight campers must successfully complete a swim check upon arrival to demonstrate comfort in open bay water. Our swim check consists of swimming forty yards continuously, treading water for 1 minute, floating on their back for 1 minute, and rotating 360 degrees in the water (changing direction). Sailors must also be able to demonstrate donning a life jacket in deep water.

Overnight Camp is Sunday-Saturday. Campers staying consecutive weeks must be picked up Saturday morning and can be checked in through an expedited line Sunday afternoon. Quinipet is accredited by the American Camp Association.

Sailing Overnight Camp: Ages 9-16
Quinipet is the ideal location for learning to sail, and it's no wonder it's our most popular program. Our top notch instructors have taught hundreds of children how to sail while also having a lot of fun!

Sailing meets Monday-Friday for 2 periods.  Campers sign up for Sailing Camp separately, before coming to camp.

Our fleet consists of
OPTI Trainers,  FJ’s, Picos, and American 18s. We offer opportunities in small boat dingy sailing depending on skill level, availability, and, of course, the weather!

*All sailors must successfully complete a swim test upon arrival to demonstrate comfort in open bay water, as specified by the NY State Department of Health. The swim check consists of four lengths (without stopping) in the deep water swimming area, treading water for 1 minute and maintaining a floating position on back for 1 minute. Sailors must also be able to demonstrate donning a life jacket in deep water.

Our Staff

Picture
It takes character, compassion, and heart to be a dynamite camp counselor, and that’s exactly what we look for in our staff. We select creative, caring, inspiring individuals who have a passion for working with children. Many of our counselors were once Quinipet campers themselves, and we also have talented staff members from around the world.

Every staff member undergoes an in-depth interview process, reference checks, and background checks. Before campers arrive, we hold a comprehensive staff orientation that focuses on risk management and age-appropriate program planning.  Training doesn't stop once campers arrive; during the summer we conduct in-service training, ongoing coaching, and performance reviews.

Our waterfront is under the supervision of experienced lifeguards with current American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard certification, which includes First Aid and CPR. The Quinipet sailing program is under the supervision of highly experienced instructors.
