My camper is coming to Quinipet the same week as a friend. Can they bunk together?

One of the best parts of camp is spending time with friends, old and new. At Quinipet, we want there to be opportunities for old friendships to flourish and new friendships to begin. Time in the cabin is a great opportunity for both to take place. Campers in the same age group tend to be in the same cabin, so if your camper’s friends are coming, they will likely be in the same cabin.

When it comes to bunks, each camper may request only one to two bunk mates and the request needs to be reciprocal. (Katie requests Amy, Amy requests Katie. Bunk requests can be made within the Camper Application or by contacting the Camp Office.)

Here’s why we have the "maximum group of three request" policy: Time in the bunks is an opportunity to get to know someone new. We don’t want to neglect an opportunity for a new friendship to grow, and having the bunk be all friends from home is not conducive to that. When campers stay together in groups, other campers get left out, especially in bunk rooms that hold a limited number. This way everyone can start off their time at camp feeling secure and excited about the week ahead!

Thank you for understanding and respecting this important policy.
What are meals like at Camp?

Quinipet is dedicated to serving our campers and staff only fresh, healthy meals in a clean and safe environment.
Led by Chef Reggie, our Kitchen Team is further committed to growing our "Farm-to-Camp" program by sourcing local produce when available.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily in our Dining Hall. Grace is sung in a fun, “camp style” way before each meal. Quinipet emphasizes the use of fresh ingredients and offers a wide variety of options over the course of each week. Each meal features a hot selection (with vegetarian alternative) served buffet style at the main window, as well as either a full breakfast bar or a salad bar at lunch and dinner. Main meals feature healthy, kid friendly options like Taco Tuesday and our “Fancy Friday” banquet . (See sample menu further down this page.) Campers and counselors sit with their cabin at meals. At dinner each evening, the cleanest cabin is announced and that Family Group gets to spin the prize wheel for fun rewards like a free treat at the Camp Store!

Our breakfast bar features freshly cut fruit, yogurt, gluten-free granola, cold cereals (Raisin Bran, Rice Chex, Cheerios, etc) and toast.

The salad bar at lunch and dinner offers fresh greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, shredded carrots, beans, tofu, croutons, house-made grain salads and a variety of seasonal produce. Daily sandwich selections are also available, ex: Turkey & Cheese, Sunbutter & Jelly. Quinipet does not use nuts, or nut products, in any of our recipes. All allergies and dietary restrictions are recorded by parents completing the required online form, "Medical History" in your CampInTouch account.

My camper (and I!) are worried about missing home. What do you recommend?

Talk about homesickness, which we prefer to call "missing home" since it’s not really being sick. Missing home is perfectly normal, and every camper can expect to feel that way at times. Talk through some strategies to get through those times, such as doing something active, talking with a friend, or writing a letter home. Our counselors are trained to help children through these experiences, so make sure your camper knows they can turn to their counselors for help.

Our recommendations for preparing for camp, especially for first time campers:

  • Speak openly about missing home. Missing parents, pets or friends is perfectly normal. Once this is understood, your child may accept these feelings with less anxiety.
  • If at all possible, come see the Camp. New campers feel so much more comfortable after seeing our bunks and meeting our friendly staff.
  • Avoid statements like “I’m going to be so lonely without you!” Don’t make your child feel guilty about going away.
  • Heighten your child’s interest by pointing out some of the exciting things you remember about your own camping experience. Be sure to be positive about how you were able to handle being away from your parents.
  • While painting a bright, promising picture of Camp, be sure your child’s expectations are realistic. With all the fun of camp comes the responsibility of growing independence; making their bed, helping to tidy the cabin, keeping tabs on their belongings, etc.
  • Involve your camper in packing for camp; it’s part of taking responsibility for themselves and their belongings plus they need to know what they have and where it is.
  • Pack a favorite blanket or stuffed animal for a little touch of home.
  • Make a calendar with your camper to pack in their bag so they can see how long they’ll be at camp. Decorate it with things to enjoy every day and that special thing you’ll do together when they get back home.
  • Children love getting mail! Prepare letters to be given out daily and bring them on Opening Day—we’re happy to distribute them at mail call.

By completing the “Confidential Camper Questionnaire” (available on your CampInTouch homepage under “Forms & Docs”) you’ll be doing both your camper and our staff a favor by giving us precious insight to your camper’s unique needs. Our Leadership is very sensitive to campers who are having difficulty acclimating to camp after a couple of days. If we have any concerns we will reach out to you with a phone call. And, of course, feel free to call us anytime if you have concerns.

Avoid setting your child up for failure by promising to pick them up early. Instead, let them know you’re confident they can handle being at camp. Through daily camper logs, bedtime cabin candle chats, and close camper/staff interactions, we work hard to help every camper have a truly wonderful week. We do not hesitate to call parents if we sense a problem, and parents are more than welcome to call us to check in.
Lastly, when you check in your camper on Sunday afternoon, take long enough to get them settled in their cabin and meet their counselors; then leave. A cheerful, confident attitude on your part will help greatly in getting their week off to a good start!

Thank you for everything you did to make her 1st week at sleepaway camp a great and positively memorable experience! I am so grateful for the wonderful counselors who helped her through her trepidation of a 1st time experience. It is truly a beautiful place--outside and especially "in"!

What is sold at the Camp Store?

All campers will be scheduled at least once daily for a visit to the Camp Store.  Snacks and drinks are available for purchase and are generally $1 or $2. We carry popular treats, but with an emphasis on offering items with limited or no artificial dyes or sweeteners, gluten-free options and nothing containing nuts. Examples: Pop Corners, organic fruit leather, ice cream bars, natural fruit pops, iced tea and juice, and Spindrift sparkling beverages. (All food and drinks purchased are consumed outside the camp store at our picnic benches and are not allowed back into cabins.)

The Camp Store also sells custom Quinipet apparel, bags, mugs, flashlights, jewelry and other fun items, along with essentials such as tooth brushes, hair brushes, deodorant and tooth paste. (The Camp Store DOES NOT sell sunscreen. Please send sunscreen items from home with your camper.) The Camp Store is also open Saturdays during Overnight Camp pick up for families to shop together.

How do I put money into my camper's Camp Store account?

Funds for your camper's account can be deposited/updated in a number of ways using eCheck, cash or credit card:
  • when you complete your camper application
  • on your CampInTouch homepage under "Accounts" (look for the wallet icon)
  • by contacting the Camp Office: quinipet@nyac.com or 631.749.0430
  • depositing money at Check In this summer

At the end of your child's camp session, unused funds greater than $5 can either be refunded to you or donated to our Camp Scholarship Fund. Campers are not allowed to carry cash at camp.
Quinipet is a progressive Christian camp owned and operated since 1947 by the New York Conference of the Methodist Church. It is our belief that God gave us earth and humankind, and it is our job as loving faithful Christians to love and care for each of these things. Our hope is that each camper will grow not only in new experiences, but in their spiritual walk with God as well.

Spiritually (and physically!) grounded upon the five rocks of Courage, Love, Faith, Humility and Honesty, Quinipet is an ideal environment for inner spiritual reflection. Each day begins and ends with short Chapel and Vesper services, where campers participate in skits, songs and prayer. Grace is sung before each meal, and camper groups may participate in devotions. Quinipet is a community that is both open and affirming to all who come, regardless of religious affiliation.

I understand there is a strict “no cell phone” policy at camp. Can my camper bring their iPad or Kindle?

Children need, now more than ever, to be “unplugged” for periods of time and what better place than camp! To that end, No Cellular or WiFi capable devices are allowed at camp.
What is allowed:
  • MP3 players that do not have any cell or WiFi capability such as the old “classic” iPods.
  • CD / radio players
  • Real books or one of the VERY old E-readers that did not have WiFi, check your closet!
What isn’t:
  • Any type of phone, smartphone, or text device.
  • Any laptop, pad or E-reader with WiFi.

Quinipet takes its No-Tech policy very seriously. Campers and Parents are required to review and sign our Camper Code of Conduct which speaks to being a good citizen at camp, including leaving their technology at home. We encourage campers to bring reading materials, small card games, simple drawing supplies and/or a journal to write in for downtime in their cabins. Quinipet is happy to offer a small lending library in our Nature Center which campers are encouraged to use. Book donations are always welcome!

Thank you!

Staying safe out in nature is all about staying diligent and using common sense...both things children sometimes forget about! Campers should bring both sunscreen and insect repellent (non-aerosol) with them to camp. It's important to go over the basics with your camper about how and when to apply each. Our staff are also trained to remind campers to apply (and re-apply) as the day goes on, as well as to check themselves for any ticks while showering and to do buddy checks. Quinipet is treated with Cedar Oil applications 2-3 times in the spring into early summer to assist with tick control. For more information about Tick Prevention at Camp, please refer to our Parent Handbook.

We also recommend bringing SPF hats and apparel to make sun protection a snap! We have partnered with grUVywear and now offer Quinipet SPF50+ rash guards in your choice of custom color! These UV shirts can be ordered directly from their website. (We DO NOT sell them at the Camp Store.) Use the code Save20 to get 20% off your entire order!
I’ve heard that drinking water on Shelter Island can be a problem? How is that addressed at Camp?

Our water quality is closely monitored through the summer and is sourced from wells on camp. If our tap water exceeds the salt level we address accordingly and provide campers with drinking water. Some campers are not used to the taste of well water, if you believe your camper may dislike the taste of well water you may provide them with bottled water.
Camp Leadership is here year-round getting ready for next summer and we're here to answer any and all questions.
