Missing Home
We understand that being away from home can be a big step in both your camper’s and your life. Being away from home, in a new environment can bring up overwhelming feelings for both campers and parents. Our counselors are all trained in how to work with campers who are missing home, we also have an experienced leadership team available to add an extra layer of support to campers. We have put together some tips below to help prepare your camper for the best week at camp possible!
Speak openly with your camper about missing home. Missing family, pets, or friends is perfectly normal. Once this is understood, your camper may accept these feelings with less anxiety.
If possible, camp should not be the first time that campers sleep away from home. Get your camper used to sleeping away from home by having sleepovers at friends' or family's homes.
Avoid statements like "I'm going to be so lonely without you" to make sure your camper does not feel guilty about being away. Try phrases like "I'm going to miss you, but I know you're going to have so much fun" instead.
Talk to your camper about your own positive camp experiences to build their excitement.
It's best to include your camper when packing for camp; this is part of them taking responsibility for themselves and their belongings. It will also help them know what they have and where it is when they get to camp.
Consider packing a favorite stuffed animal or blanket. Your camper can often feel more settled with a touch of home comforts with them.
Campers love writing letters to you! We recommend that you send pre addressed/stamped envelopes with your camper.
Visit Quinipet during an Open House or schedule a private tour, and bring your camper along! This will help them feel more familiar with their surroundings and gives them an opportunity to ask any questions they may have.
