Sue and George Klein Welcome Center "Seymour House"
Over the last 40 or more years, Sue and George Klein created and nurtured the Family Camp community at Camp Quinipet.
This community has gathered every summer and has become a multi-generational extended family for many to share joys, sorrows,
challenges, and celebrations in the lives of all. A core group of Family Campers decided it was time to recognize Sue and George, while assisting Quinipet
in raising funds for the much needed Welcome Center. They have formed a committee to spearhead this effort. In recognition
of the welcoming spirit of Sue and George, Family Camp has initiated a Campaign to establish The Sue and George Klein Welcome
Center at Quinipet.
In December 2008, Quinipet was blessed with the gift of a house from the Seymour
family on Shelter Island. This house was moved to Quinipet on September 23, 2009. A new foundation will be poured next
to the Dining Hall. The house will be set and finished over the winter and spring of 2010 and ready for use for the 2010 summer
camping season. Placement of the house will be perpendicular to the Dining Hall, forming a “T.” A breezeway will
connect the two buildings. The architectural drawing above shows the entrance to the Welcome Center on the left (two sets
of windows) and the breezeway connection. The Dining Hall will attach to the right of the breezeway. Both structures and the
connecting breezeway will be finished in cedar shake.
The Welcome
Center will function as a central gathering place, where visitors and groups can register and pick up room assignments. This
centralized and more visible location is especially needed for those who arrive at night for weekend retreats. The Welcome
Center also will supply information about the Camp and scheduled activities, as well as information about activities in the
surrounding area, ferry schedules, brochures, and much more. The Quinipet offices will be moved to the Welcome Center from its current location
in the basement of the Director’s house, permitting greater accessibility to staff. Finally, in the new foundation,
new facilities and housing will be constructed for the camp nurse, who is onsite 24 hours a day, seven days a week during
the summer overnight camp season. The Welcome Center will be open throughout the year to serve retreat groups, school
groups who come to Quinipet for environmental and leadership education, environmental education training for teacher groups,
and many others. The total project cost to move the house, attach it to the Dinning Hall and
renovate it to suit Quinipet's needs is $250,000. The Family Camp Campaign goal is $75,000. We are identifying and reaching
out to other potential donors in the Shelter Island Community, Sue's church community at Newtown United Methodist Church,
and several foundations. As of September 25, 2009, nearly $32,000has been raised.
We urgently
need the support of everyone in the Quinipet Community of Friends and users. Gifts of all sizes are needed - No gift is too
small. Please click on the "Donate Now" button on the homepage of this website, or mail your check made out to the
Conference Camping Capital Campaign - Memo: Welcome Center. Check the website often for updates.
