Wesley Hall Exterior Renovation and Stage Improvements
**This project is under way and needs support right now! Wesley Hall was constructed in the mid 1950’s and remains the center of camp life to this day. It has been the performance space for Shelter Island Showkids, the world famous Shelter Island talent and variety show, since the 1980’s and home to our day camp and groups on retreat. The large stage allows everyone to participate in performances but the time has come to show Wesley Hall the love it has shown us for the past 60 years.
Total Cost : $30,000 Road, Run-Off, and Storm Water Improvements:
A smooth road means so much more than just a gentle ride through camp. Blacktop and road surfacing is key in our run-off plan to catch all the storm water and get it back into the aquifer before it goes “overboard” back into the bay. Beyond water catchment, a smooth road allows for those with mobility concerns to move freely on the property. Perhaps they can’t go walking on the beach, but moving up and down a new road free of sand and pot holes makes it safe and fun for everyone!
Total Cost : $125,000 Sailing Barn Reconstruction:
The condition of the sailing barn makes us all a bit sad. It was built as part of the original estate more than 100 years ago. It housed horses and all the basics to run the small Jennings farm. But it is beyond its useful life. Sometime, perhaps 30 years ago, structural alternations were made to the frame, destroying the barns long-term integrity. The locust posts on which it lies have withstood the test of time, but even locust posts have a finite lifespan. It seems that the best option now, as responsible stewards, is to start fresh.
